Continuing on from Part One! Pike Place Market Pike Place Market is amazing. It's a super-sized farmers market that's open every day, and has just about everything you could ever want. During our stay, we went to the market at least once a day to try a new place to eat, or just walk around and look at all of the awesome local art and crafts being sold. The grocery situation in the market is also great. They have tons of vendors selling very fresh fish, fruit, vegetables, and even homemade pasta! Next time, we're going to have to find a hotel room with a kitchen. That way we can stock up on fresh and tasty seafood from the market, then cook it up ourselves! When you eat the way I do, going to a restaurant for seafood is usually a very [Read more...]
The first time I visited Seattle in early 2013, it quickly became one of my favorite places. Coming from the northeast United States, the pacific northwest seemed like a paradise, even though I visited during the "winter". I would say that partly cloudy, mid-60s, and scattered showers is a way better February forecast than the normal garbage in New York. My return at the end of August this year, further solidified my very high opinion of coastal Washington. A whole week of clear skies, with warm, but far from uncomfortable temperatures. Perfect weather for walking around and exploring downtown. The Hotel My fiancee and I stayed at Motif Seattle in Downtown Seattle, which gave us access to some of the best tourist spots in Seattle [Read more...]
After far too long of a wait, I am excited to finally be announcing my newest adventure: I have joined Blue Apron as Software Engineer!! ...like two months ago...but starting a new job is hard, and so is blogging. There is so much "new" packed into this change, it's almost overwhelming. This new role marks a pretty dramatic shift from spending the past seven years primarily as a PHP Engineer to developing with the Ruby language, on the Rails framework. I've always considered myself a language agnostic, using whatever I had to/needed to, but now I am really putting my money where my mouth is. I've worked with Ruby a few times, even written some pet side-projects on Rails, but working with something professionally can be a whole new [Read more...]
Over the past couple of years, I've made some very significant changes in my life: I've lost over 90 pounds, significantly improved my health, upgraded my style, and made it through my first powerlifting competition in one piece. I'm very happy with the progress I've made, and the things I've achieved, but there was the question of: what next? Well I'm happy to finally be able to publically announce the next major change: as of June, I'll be moving to NYC to work at Vimeo as an Application Engineer! For months, I've felt the pull of the NYC tech scene. Between the meetups, hackathons and tech talks, there was so much to learn and do, but just out of my reach. So when I heard Vimeo - a company I always thought would be really cool to [Read more...]
Seems Congress, along with their buddies Big Content, have been hard at work trying to piss off the entire internet. Now for the first time in recent memory, Congress seems to have actually accomplished something. The SOPA/PIPA bills cannot be allowed to sneak through our system so, even though I am a little late to the game announcing it, I will also be switching off this site in protest with the help of a handy plugin. See you folks on the other side.
